After a ten-year trip in the Balkans and Europe, Balkans Beyond Borders Short Film Festival goes digital and invites you to a unique experience!
This peculiar year Balkans Beyond Borders Short Film Festival adopts a new form and becomes digital! The 11th BBB Short Film Festival changes destination and instead of going to Izmir, due to the cancelling of all physical events as safety measures for COVID-19 by the Izmir Governorship, it goes DIGITAL. All screenings will be live-streamed on Facebook and Youtube following the Festival screenings programme and will be available only the days of the Festival from 1 to 4 October.
For the first time the BBB Festival experience comes to your home, so get the projectors out and join BBB screenings with your friends. BBB Festival maintains loyalty to its purpose and aspires to transform the current complicated circumstances into a unique experience. Thus, sit comfortably and enjoy a wide range of Short Films coming straight at your home. Being consistent to the BBB role as a platform of networking and collaboration among filmmakers of the region, apart from the screenings programme, all parallel activities will be held online maximizing the interaction between the filmmakers, partners and guests.
The Competition Programme of the 11th Balkans Beyond Borders Short Film Festival is inspired by the ambiguity of contrUst which highlights both the contradictory sides of an issue and the trustfulness among people. Balkans Beyond Borders invites you to a 4-day digital event full of short films, and online workshops in collaboration with organizations and entities from different fields. For one more time, we invite you to “see” Balkans through our lenses.

The Festival is honoured to have as three dynamic women from the contemporary Balkan cinema scene as members of the jury: 1. Nesrin Cavadzade, Turkish actress/director 2. Jacqueline Lentzou Greek writer/director 3. Mihaela Constantinescu, director of Buzău International Film Festival – BUZZ IFF.
ΒΒΒ BEST FILM (1000 euros), ΒΒΒ FIRST ENTRY (500 euros) and SPECIAL MENTIONS. For one more time, we give voice to the audience to nominate the winner of the BBB AUDIENCE AWARD (300 euros). The voting will take place online and the process is sponsored by the Biennale of Western Balkans.
The Festival has a strong group of partners guaranteeing its integrity:
the French Institute in Izmir, the Municipality of Izmir, the Adriatic Short Film Festival, MIYU Distribution, the civil non-profit organisation KINITRO, the Biennale of Western Balkans and the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey. KINITRO is responsible for making the festival inclusive in terms of the screenings for deaf and hard of hearing community (accessible screenings will be mentioned as such).
About Balkans Beyond Borders: The twice-awarded by the EU organization “Balkans Beyond Borders” is an Athens-based non-profit organization that seeks to promote intercultural dialogue and non-formal learning, through film art and new media. BBB seeks to empower the new Balkan “Creators” and make their work known in the region and beyond. Believing that the people of art, and especially the new generation of them, can form an important basis for cooperation and development in order to raise the critical issues of our time and to shape a common European space.
