BBB at the Balkan Express Conference in Prague 1,2/12/2017

BBB participated at the 4th International Balkan Studies conference, which is another stop of the Balkan Express, organized this year by the Faculty of Humanities in cooperation with the Institute of International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences (Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic) with the film Paper, Horse and Birds by Zoran Tairović.  The conference took place in Prague on 1, 2 December 2017.

Paper, Horse and Birds

Paper, Horse and Birds was presented in a bloc with 2 other documentaries – one on the refugee crises and second on women and migration. It added another important topic in the conference, which is socio-economic marginalisation. Overall, the film very nicely fitted the program and it was very well received by the conference guests. They found it interesting – both in relation to the topic and also the way, in which it was made. It was a very poetic insight into the everyday struggles of the marginalised Roma. Moreover, the film complimented the showing of the art piece, which was also made out of recycled paper. The screening was accompanied with a welcome note of Veroniki Krikoni, President of BBB and Jovana Manojlovic, producer of the film. The screenings were followed by reading of short stories, visual art project and music performance.

The audience consisted of academics with a focus on the Balkans and few persons from the former Yugoslavia, so they were all well informed about the situation presented in the film. However, it was very useful to see this particular insight into the everyday life realities as presented in your film. Marketa Slavkova, member of the conference organization team states that, overall, from academic point of view, we consider documentaries an important medium of communicating specific social issues to broader public.
