Balkans Beyond Borders organizes an online panel discussion with title Cultural challenges of Europe nowadays and the role of cinema in building cultural identity and European consciousness – the Greek viewpoint. This panel discussion will take place as part of the parallel activities of the 11th Balkans Beyond Borders Short Film Festival “Athens Edition” on December the 4th at 18.00-20.00 EET. It will be held in Greek. The discussion addresses to students of cinema, cultural, social and ethnography studies and to whoever is interested in the topic. Culture has always played an important role in creating identity among people and it has been considered as a cornerstone of identity and unity in the EU. Has cinema contributed to the creation of a common European consciousness? Is there a connection between European films and European identity? What is the role and impact of short films on shaping European consciousness? Is the modern European citizen looking for European film productions or short films? Is there access? At a time when the power of image dominates in social media, what is the role of culture and its place in this new reality?

Part of the aims of the Balkans Beyond Borders is to promote intercultural dialogue at the Balkan and pan-European level as well as to promote European integration through the promotion of culture and the co-operation of cultural and civil society actors. BBB has set up a network of academic collaborators in the Balkans, Europe, and worldwide and this event aims to bring together academic scientists from Greek Universities, film and culture professionals as well as young students in an open discussion about the future of Europe and its culture.
