Theme of inspiration – 16th Balkans Beyond Borders Short Film Festival ‘DISTORToΠia’

DISTORToΠia or How do you mirror reality?

In a world where truth bends under the weight of perception and the sociopolitical turbulenceσ distort the anthropological and geopolitical landscape, we feel the deep need to stand critically and question what is real, what is a reflection and what is an illusion.

How do we perceive the everyday information we receive? Is it easy to digest or do we need to create an illusional bubble in order to keep up in our “normality”?

Do we let our normality be affected by the sociopolitical events that surround us or do we create an illusional bubble so that we continue our personal life unaffected?

Are we content and satisfied with our personal life and choices or do we create an illusional bubble to soothe ourselves and quietly accept all those things that give us pressure and anxiety?

Can we reconcile the ideal of equality with the inequalities entrenched in our social systems? Do we want to take action and change our life and society or do we stand still in our illusional bubble that makes us believe that we are unable to bring the change we dream of and instead we pretend that every action is meaningless?

Who defines the narratives of power, and how do these narratives reflect or distort the struggles for humanitarian rights, global justice, and socio-ecological transformations?

How do social constructions shape our identities, our struggles, and our hopes?

How does the power of those who lead us is reflected in our actions?

Τhe festival welcomes submissions that grapple with these questions in bold, creative, and innovative ways. This year’s theme is not just a mirror to the struggles of our present but also a lens to imagine a hopeful future. Let your stories unveil the unseen and inspire us to see beyond the reflections and illusions.
