14th edition of BBB Short Film Festival

The 14th edition of Balkans Beyond Borders Short Film Festival travels this year to the city of Nikšić in Montenegro, from the 11th to the 14th of October, with the theme Edgetales. 

There is a thread that unites all stories with one another, crafting each one meticulously knot by knot, with the intention of revealing what lies beneath. 

The theme Edgetales is inspired by “fairytales” which narrate stories wishing to re-articulate and re-contextualise the notions of the “border”, of limitations and liminalities, of personal experiences that make visible, that which has been kept hidden and unseen. The Festival will feature a collection of short films – edgetales – encompassing a wide range of issues and topics often considered on the societal fringe, on “edges”, and represent diverse experiences from the Balkan region. These selected tales have ignited our inspiration, and we are eager to see them unfurling on the big screen.

Featuring a Competition programme of 33 films, participating filmmakers will have the opportunity to get awarded with the ‘BBB Best Prize’, ‘First Entry’, ‘Audience’, and three ‘Special Mentions’.

The screening programme includes the section BBB Focus: Italy with short films curated by Villamare Short Film Festival, the section BBB Beyond which is the international programme, and the section BBB & Co: young  creators – fresh ideas in cooperation with the school of Film of Aristotle University, Thessaloniki

The audiences, visitors and guests are invited to participate in the 2-day event BBB Cine-Forum titled ‘Unveiling Balkan Cinema: past, present and future’, on the 13th and 14th of October, which develops around an effort to investigate Balkan cinema, its ‘identity(ies)’, its past and historicity, present challenges and creative opportunities which lie ahead. 

The activities consist of the roundtable Balkan Kaleidoscope: Gazes, Cultural Identities and Nuances Through Cinema, masterclasses and workshops on filmmaking and storytelling.

The 14th BBB Short Film Festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture Montenegro, the Tourist Organisation Montenegro and the Municipality of Nikšić.
The BBB cine-forum is supported by the Film Center of Montenegro.
